Campaign: How regulators use data

The UK’s regulators are the main source of consumer information. We campaign to ensure that this data is useful as it is critical to consumer welfare.

For example, we are pushing for regulators to publish useful complaints data. This data helps consumers choose between services and it may also help incentivise companies to offer better services.

Despite it being best practice, however, some regulators are not publishing useful complaints data. This may ultimately put consumers at risk, affecting regulators’ duty to protect consumers. Given that most regulators already collect this data, publishing it should not be a burdensome task.

We are planning further research on regulators’ use of data. If you want to support our work on this campaign, please get in touch at contact@centreforpublicdata.org.

Report: How regulators share complaints data

April 2024

This report looks at eight key UK regulators of consumer services to see which publish useful data on complaints.

Complaints data should be published to protect consumers; nearly all key consumer-facing regulators publish this data. The Gambling Commission, however, is falling short of these standards. We call on them to match the example set by other regulators.
