Data infrastructure

If data is to meet the needs of our Government, businesses, and citizens, we first need to make sure that the right systems are in place to collect, share and use it.

Why data infrastructure?

There’s little doubt that, if used wisely, public data can help generate real social and economic value. But currently, Government doesn’t always have the structures in place to maximise this value.

The UK should aspire to build a data infrastructure that allows high-quality public data to be shared appropriately inside and outside of Government.

Current projects

Statistical reform

We want to ensure that UK statistics answer the important questions. So our work often involves recommendations to producers of statistics and various statistics authorities.

Postal address data

We’re calling on the Government to produce an accurate and freely accessible national address database to stimulate innovation and greater efficiency within public services.

Data for evaluation

The Government can unlock real value in its use of public money if it evaluates policy properly - but first it must collect the right data.

How regulators use data

The UK’s regulators are the main source of consumer information. We campaign to ensure that this data is useful, as it is critical to consumer welfare.

High-value datasets

We’re calling on the Government to make their high-value datasets freely available to support government processes and unlock economic growth.

Past projects

Fragmented data

To avoid valuable data being inaccessible or wasted, we recommend that all public data should adhere to a compulsory data standard and be published in a central repository.
